Shadowing Veterinarians at Rescues and Sanctuaries
Discover the picturesque city of Perugia and immerse yourself in a comprehensive animal welfare education program designed for aspiring veterinarians.
Students will embark on an unforgettable journey through sanctuaries such as Il Rifugio di Bea, Rifugio per Cani Agrilia, and WildUmbria, where they will learn from dedicated professionals and gain hands-on experience in animal care and welfare.
Il Rifugio di Bea, nestled in the hills of Perugia, is a sanctuary run by passionate volunteers who care for a variety of animals, including dogs, cats, cows, horses, birds, pigs, sheep, and goats. The sanctuary’s founder is dedicated to educating young people about animal welfare, and the staff regularly organizes educational programs for children and adults. Students will have the opportunity to shadow the sanctuary’s veterinarians and will be treated to a delicious lunch during their visit.
The dog shelter Rifugio per Cani Agrilia is a safe haven for over 140 stray and abused dogs. Students will engage in lessons on dog welfare, behavior, and care, as well as participate in the administration of preventive treatments. They will also have the chance to shadow the shelter’s veterinarian, learning about clinical examinations and the treatment of sick animals.
WildUmbria, the region’s primary wildlife rescue center, not only focuses on animal rescue but also monitors and manages wildlife populations and their environments. Students will learn about topics related to wildlife and the environment, participating in a range of activities, including shadowing vets and zoologists at the wildlife clinic, learning about wildlife monitoring techniques, and visiting the avian museum.
Through their work at these sanctuaries and rescue centers, students will gain invaluable insights into animal care and welfare, wildlife rescue and monitoring, and the importance of conservation. This well-rounded and immersive experience in the field of veterinary medicine will leave participants with a profound appreciation for the diverse world of animal welfare and the dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to protect and care for these creatures.
