Shadowing Veterinarians at Rescues, Sanctuaries and Veterinary Clinics

In the bustling city of Milan and its surroundings, aspiring veterinarians will find a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of animal sanctuaries and clinics that specialize in the rescue, rehabilitation, and care of various species.

Students will embark on an unforgettable journey through sanctuaries like Progetto Cuori Liberi, Fattoria Capre e Cavoli, and Porcikomodi, and learn from the dedicated professionals at Clinica Veterinaria Europea.

Progetto Cuori Liberi, located in Sairano, Pavia, provides a safe haven for animals rescued from abusive situations and exploitation. With around 200 animals, students will work alongside dedicated staff to care for and understand the needs of cows, donkeys, horses, goats, sheep, and other species. This sanctuary emphasizes the importance of animal-human interactions and the concept of freedom, promoting an anti-speciesist culture. Students will also have the opportunity to shadow veterinarians who provide regular care to the inhabitants of the rescue.

Fattoria Capre e Cavoli is home to around 50 animals rescued from exploitation and abandonment. Here, students will learn about the individual needs and personalities of each animal, including horses, donkeys, pigs, and more. The sanctuary’s mission is to foster respect for all living creatures and promote knowledge about animal care. Students will have the chance to shadow specialized veterinarians during their visit.

Porcikomodi, part of the Vitadacani network, rescues animals from the slaughtering industry and raises awareness about inhumane conditions in slaughterhouses. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the sanctuary’s history, network, and rules, as well as the care and welfare of animals rescued from laboratories. They will also receive a comprehensive introduction to pig ethology, observing the behavior and welfare of pigs and wild boars, as well as environmental enrichment strategies.

At Clinica Veterinaria Europea, students will experience a cutting-edge facility that offers a wide range of specialties and services for dogs, cats, and exotic animals. With a focus on comprehensive care, the clinic includes a physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and sports medicine center, as well as a training and behavior center. Students will have the chance to learn from the experienced professionals at the clinic.

In addition to their work at sanctuaries and clinics, participants will visit the Museum of Natural History in Milan and the LIPU wildlife rescue center ‘La Fagiana.’ These visits will deepen their understanding of biodiversity, species conservation, and wildlife rescue, providing a well-rounded and immersive experience in the field of veterinary medicine.
